What should a new electronics store employee know?

Question by JennY!: What should a new electronics store employee know?
I’m not going to work in an actual electronics store, but in the electronics department of a large, extremely well-known department store. I got promoted from Apparel, and I don’t know a lot about electronics at all. My new area consists of a photo lab, cell phones and service and obviously electronics. Any tips or helpful websites to help me learn? Thank you and any additional info can be provided. Thanks!!!

Read all you can find about the general types of items in the department,
and also read the owner’s manuals for as many specific items as possible.

Everyone should know, and will find that
experience is the best teacher,
but experience is what you get just after you need it.
Also:
Good judgement comes from bad experience,
and experience comes from bad judgement.

I would suggest chatting with other employees in the same department to see if they have any suggestions.

Also, be sure to keep up to date with different websites that have different opinions (eg. Consumer Reports – also a magazine, cnet.com, etc.) You will see the different opinions and be able to compare them.

Be honest and don’t fib just because you don’t want to sound stupid. Hmmm… something else that is definitely helpful is keeping track of which products are returned to the store.
Is there a manufacturer or a specific product that gets more returns than other products in a particular category?

Consumers, like me, love when salespeople are honest about brands not performing well. Also, knowing what microwaves for example do get returned more often and what brands are generally better performing can help in your recommendations to people when they ask for your opinion / suggestion(s).

    I hope this helps!

    Good luck!

Ok, I just wrote up a huge massive answer, and spent half and hour trying to edit it down to fit within the size constraints.. but it still wasn’t small enough after taking more than half of it out…

So I’ve decided to just upload the full text of my answer here: http://pastebin.com/KschKkQ4

    Hope this helps.

Get to know the phone providers, services, and packages, and how to hook things together.
